Six Michigan nonprofits, many dedicated to working with communities of color or in the arts, got a substantial boost Tuesday thanks to philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott.
Known for donating billions of dollars to nonprofits in the last two years, Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, on Tuesday announced another round of $2.6 billion in gifts to 286 organizations. In Michigan, ACCESS, Allied Media Projects, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Mosaic Youth Theatre, Motown Museum and the Sphinx Organization all received donations.
The Motown Museum s $5 million gift from Scott is one of the largest donations it has received during a $25 million fundraising campaign. ....

Sister works against drunken driving, two years after fatal crash

The fatal head-on collision happened two years ago in the early morning hours of Jan. 6, 2019, along Interstate 75 in Lexington, Kentucky.
Time cannot heal all wounds, and Abbas Taylor’s voice wobbled and broke as she relived the tragedy on Zoom.
“In a split second, we lost a significant unit of our family,” the Northville woman said, “because a drunk driver was able to get into a vehicle, take that vehicle on the wrong side of the same freeway my family was driving on and collide with them head on, killing every single one of them instantly.” ....
