SALT LAKE CITY A $2.5 million civil lawsuit has been filed by the estate of a man shot and killed by a Unified police officer a shooting that prosecutors determined was not legally justified.
On Wednesday, a brother and cousin of Bryan Peña-Valencia, who represent his estate, along with their attorney Robert Sykes announced the lawsuit against the officers involved in the shooting death as well as the Unified Police Department, claiming the officers due to a lack of training escalated the situation by unnecessarily chasing after him and then used excessive force by shooting him five times after he was already on the ground. ....

Iowa City man accused of breaking fiance's finger during assault

An Iowa City man was arrested early Thursday after an alleged assault on his fiancé resulted in her finger being broken.
Police say the incident occurred Saturday morning at the Roberts Road residence the couple shares. 47-year-old Robert Sykes and the woman were engaged in an argument that turned physical when Sykes got angry.
He’s accused of putting his hand on his fiance’s face and shoving her head multiple times. He allegedly also grabbed the woman’s left ring finger, reportedly twisting it with such force that it broke.
The woman’s finger was swollen and obviously broken when arriving officers investigated the altercation. By that time, Sykes had gathered his belongings and left. ....
