An increase in funding for Iowa’s “workforce machines” is in the works.
The Iowa Valley Community College (IVCCD) Board of Directors at the meeting Wednesday heard from Association of Community College Trustees (IACCT) Executive Director Emily Shields.
“I’m very passionate about community colleges,” Shields said. “I think they’re the most important part of the higher education sector, especially going into the future.”
The Association of Community College Trustees is a non-profit organization advocating for Iowa’s 15 community colleges, and Shields said her top priority as executive director has been following the current state legislative session. ....

The graduating class of 2021 deserves a lot of kudos. To be certain, every college graduate works hard to achieve their degree. But, the class of 2021 has had to worry about more than late-night study sessions and passing their finals. Their college experience has been altered by events outside of their control.
For more than a year, we have been working through our pandemic response, which has turned the student experience upside down. Masks and social distancing are the new normal, many classes are held virtually, and there are fewer opportunities for students to engage in normal college activities. On top of that, a derecho ripped through campus this August, altering the calendar start date to the semester and the buildings where we were planning to hold class. ....
