2020 YEAR IN REVIEW: Coronavirus and its impact on the community dominated news cycle


The COVID-19 pandemic touched and impacted everyone’s life in some way, shape or form in 2020.
It began in mid-March, when the first case hit Kern County and Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statewide stay-at-home order less than a week later.
And it continues today, with coronavirus raging across the county, sectors of the local economy hindered or shuttered all together, and education and religious services having a drastically altered appearance at the close of 2020.
Here’s how the pandemic shaped the community over the past year:
SURGING CASES
There have been about 1,000 new COVID-19 infections reported each day for the past three weeks. There are more active infections than at any point previously this year and hospitals are stretched to the limits in their ability to care for the sick. Critical care beds are running out. ....

New board members sworn in at local school boards


December marks a changing of the guard for local school boards. Tuesday was a particularly momentous day after an election season that attracted more candidates and more attention.
New trustees were sworn in for the boards of the Kern Community College District, the Bakersfield City School District, Rosedale Union School District and Panama-Buena Vista School District. 
Yovani Jimenez, 29, a case manager for Clinica Sierra Vista, was sworn into the board of the Kern Community College District. Jimenez will represent Area 6, a newly-rezoned area that stretches from south Kern County to Lake Isabella.
Jimenez is a resident and native of Lamont, the son of an immigrant and a first-generation college student. He says he knows first-hand the importance of education in the area he represents. ....

Schools are allowed to stay open when COVID-19 surges, but have trouble staffing them


Rosedale Union School District is the biggest district in Kern County that brought general education students of all grade levels onto campus this fall. It has vocal support from its families, administration and board to bring students on campus as quickly as possible.
So the moment the district could, it welcomed students to campuses in person. The gradual rollout over the last six weeks was completed last week when the oldest students returned.
But it didn t last long.
Freedom Middle School closed its campus Thursday, a little over a week after opening, and the rest of the school district will switch back to distance learning next week. ....
