Antoine Whittley search party aims to inspire community participation

For Shurston McElroy, the disappearance of Antoine Whittley triggered a childhood trauma from when a friend and classmate went missing. For her daughter, Shurston Harris, the vanishing of Antoine hit even closer to home. She used to mentor the 17-year-old Kennedy High student at the Richmond Police Activities League.
They were among a church-organized search party that combed the remote area of Castro Point near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge on Saturday, which did not succeed at locating Antoine, but did help rule out places where he could be found.
“It felt good to be scouring uncharted territory along the shoreline and knowing we were helping to try and make a difference,” said McElroy. ....

Richmond collaborations deliver hope amid difficult holiday season

On Macdonald Ave. Tuesday, hundreds of “boxes of hope” containing Christmas dinners were handed out to community members in need. Meanwhile on Bissell Ave., families got books along with their frozen turkeys and pies. And over on S. 16th St., donated Christmas dinners came with gift cards.
Such events came at a critical time for community members facing mounting economic hardships from the COVID-19 pandemic.
For years, the Richmond community has fostered a reputation for banding together to support neighbors experiencing difficult times. The city’s residents, businesses, government agencies, schools, nonprofits and religious organizations collaborate annually on charitable giveaways. RPAL to give away 1,000 toys at drive-thru event Thursday

The Richmond Police Activities League (RPAL) will be spreading seasonal cheer this week when they team up with partners to host the “Richmond Xmas Toy Giveaway” and gift 1,000 toys to local youth.
Set for Thursday, Dec. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at RPAL, 2200 Macdonald Ave. in Richmond, the event will feature a drive-thru toy distribution for all ages where toys will be displayed and delivered to each car via volunteers. Toys will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, (sign-ups not necessary) and residents are asked to wear masks and stay inside their cars at all times. ....

Richmond police to host community holiday event on Zoom

Demonstrating an “if you can’t come to the party, then the party will come to you” spirit, Richmond’s finest are welcoming local community members to join them for the “RPD Holiday Virtual Event” on Zoom Wed., Dec. 16.
Set for 4 p.m. that afternoon, the RPD touts its virtual party as not only an opportunity to connect with fellow community members while enjoying seasonal music, but also a chance to get the 411 on holiday safety information.
