Sunny White, a Rotarian, reads a book to Rebecca Kuberry s attentive second grade class. For the last 23 years the Rotary Club of Craig has gone into the Moffat County Elementary schools and read books to second grade classes. That all changed this year though as like many across the country and the world the Rotary Club of Craig had to adjust to a virtual program. Rotarians, including board members Daniel Snyder and Randy Looper, have recorded themselves reading books to the kids. The videos can then be played by the teachers at their discretion. The books chosen by the Rotarians are mostly picture books written by Cathie Gebhart, including Dan the Fish, Wade the Turtle, and Justine the Cat. These are all part of a series of books that Gebhart wrote alongside different authors and except for one case different illustrators that came out between 2015 and 2020. ....
Big Grant to Help Before and After School Programs After school learning programs to keep kids engaged will be at three more schools in the valley this summer thanks to a new federally-funded U.S. Dept. of Education grant being provided through Washington’s Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. ESD or Educational Service District 105 officials say the 21st Century Grant will support before and after-school programs in science, math, and reading. The grant will help fund the programs for students at Adams Elementary, McKinley Elementary, and Ridgeview Elementary in the Yakima School district. 80 students at each school will be involved in the program during each five years of the grant. BrightRidge is funding a new broadband expansion that will bring internet service to another 1,051 rural locations in Washington County. Officials with BrightRidge said the broadband expansion is made possible by work the utility did last year with the help of $2.47 million in Tennessee Emergency Broadband grants it received in August from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. BrightRidge matched that grant funding, which was part of the Coronavirus Relief Fund, with $617,828 in local funds to bring the total cost of the project to $3,089,143. According to a news release from the utility on Thursday, fiber trunk lines installed under the grant funding have allowed BrightRidge to provide broadband to additional customers in need of better internet service. ....
Update: 2:30 p.m.: Moffat County High School and Ridgeview Elementary were put into a shelter in place Wednesday morning for an incident that occurred in the 800 block of Columbine. “At about 10 am this morning one of our Community Service Officers was handling a parking violation in the 800 block of Columbine,”Capt. Bill Leonard said in a statement. The Community Service Officer was confronted by a male owner of the vehicle, who made comments to the officer about having a firearm, Leonard said. The officer called for assistance and left the immediate area. Officers from the Craig Police Department and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office responded and made contact with the male by telephone. ....
