LAKELAND The Lakeland City Commission, this week, upheld its Planning and Zoning Board s decision to deny a proposed cell tower at 1800 Harden Boulevard. In January, the board voted 4-2 to deny the proposed cell tower brought forward by applicant Mattaniah Jahn. The application was for a 110-foot tall, flush mount cell tower, which Jahn said was a compromise down from the originally desired 150-foot tower. Jahn represents SAFAN Inc. and 1 Source Towers, LLC, according to city records. Though Jahn argued the tower was needed to solve a significant gap in coverage for Verizon users, the board found the tower to be incompatible with the city s land development code. The tower would have necessitated a significant adjustment to the city s setback requirements and would have ended up too close to nearby residential neighborhoods. ....

Nearly 6,000 residential units may soon be coming to Florida s Galapagos Island. The Ridgewood Lakes development is up for approval at Wednesday s Polk County Planning Commission meeting. While the Walton Ridgewood Village Development-owned project was originally approved in the 1980s, it is now up for official unit count approval. The project is legally considered a development of regional impact. Surrounding residents are opposing the proposed 5,971 units across 2,317 acres, including the Lake Wales Ridge, a 100-mile-long stretch of ancient dunes partially located in Polk County. They say the development will ruin the local water supply, intensify problems with sinkholes and destroy the habitat of local rare, endangered plant and animal species. ....
