On the 10th anniversary of Christchurch s deadly earthquake, how far has the city come and what challenges remain?

When the deadly second earthquake struck Christchurch 10 years ago today, among the many things toppled by natural forces were statues of the city s founding father John Robert Godley, colonial politician William Rolleston and imperial hero Robert Falcon Scott.
Far worse things happened, of course, but this break with the past came to feel powerfully symbolic.
My 2016 book Christchurch Ruptures was in large part about the risks of our thinking being trapped in the past and attempting to put things back as they were. Might letting these statues go allow the city to leave behind the colonial attitudes and practices they represented? ....

Some 11 months ago when Covid-19 restrictions first paralysed the metropolis, thousands of people in Karachi were left without a definitive source of income. Businesses were indefinitely shut, transport was suspended and offices resorted to mass layoffs. There seemed little hope for betterment at the time. Many among the throngs of rural-to-urban-migrants who had once moved to the financial capital in hopes of finding better opportunities, suddenly had no choice but to board the first available bus back home.
However, with most restrictions eased and businesses slowly but surely opening, the financial capital appears to be finally inching towards normalcy, after what seemed like forever. A new motel, rebuilding a burned-down church, strengthening and alterations to the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre and a multimillion-dollar private hospital refurbishment.
Those were some of the top projects that were issued building
contents in 2020 and were part of 1228 applications worth more than $142 million.
The biggest consent issued last year was $18.9m for seismic strengthening and internal alterations to the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre.
Rotorua Lakes Council arts and culture representative councillor Mercia Yates said the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre redevelopment will be of huge benefit to the community. ....
