One of Oregon s most popular rafting and kayaking destinations won t open this summer after state officials decided it was too dangerous to allow traffic onto Clackamas River Highway 224 following last September s Riverside Fire. Whitewater outfitters and boating groups pushed the Oregon Department of Transportation to reopen the highway just above North Fork Reservoir so they could access 11 miles of the stream s iconic whitewater. But officials said this week that conditions remain too dangerous and that work won t be completed this summer in the region southeast of Estacada and the Portland Metro Area. The current road closure is at milepost 31 on Highway 224. Access to North Fork Reservoir is open but the upper river, forest and boat ramps are not. The Forest Service also has a large wildfire closure in place. ....
