Plan for walking path along San Gabriel River moves forward • Long Beach Post News

The project, approved in an 8-1 vote by the City Council Tuesday, would run along a 3-mile stretch of the river from Carson Street in the north to Atherton Street in the south.
The stretch already has a bike path, but proponents said the open space concept could provide a safer environment for pedestrians as well as keep the area free of debris and encampments.
Councilwoman Suzie Price, who co-authored the motion, was adamant that she would not support using city funds to get the project built but would instead push for state or county dollars. Price previously said she envisions a simplistic design with organic vegetation and a dirt walking path for pedestrians to put space between them and experienced cyclists who travel at high speeds along the river’s bike path. ....

Residents file petition in court to halt storage facility project set to be built near Los Cerritos • Long Beach Post News

The Riverpark Coalition and the nonprofit Los Angeles Waterkeeper, which promotes efforts that benefit the region’s waterways, brought the petition Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, arguing that the City Council’s April 13 approval of the Pacific Place Project based on a mitigated negative declaration in place of an environmental impact report was insufficient. The group is calling for an environmental review to be conducted.
Due to historical development trends that favored industries with high levels of pollution, West Long Beach has a severe lack of parks and open space, according to the petition. InSite Property Group purchased the land at 3701 N Pacific Place in 2019 to construct an RV storage facility and headquarters for their company. The project calls for the privately-owned land to be developed by InSite Property Group with a mixed commercial use. ....

City leaders approve storage facility where advocates wanted a park • Long Beach Post News

A contentious proposed storage facility near the banks of the Los Angeles River won final approval after the Long Beach City Council voted 7-1 to allow construction to move forward despite fierce resistance from advocates demanding the privately-owned site be used for park space.

The council’s vote certifies a decision made by the Planning Commission in December that approved lot mergers, zoning changes and permits for the construction of the three-story, 152,000 square-foot self storage and recreational vehicle storage facility that will be built at 3701 Pacific Place.
Councilman Roberto Uranga was the lone opposition vote, stating that he supported a full environmental impact report. Councilwoman Suely Saro recused herself because of her work with an environmental agency that had taken part in negotiations for the project site. ....

Editorial: Make green space not development the priority on the LA Riverfront

If you have driven through Bixby Knolls or Wrigley recently, you might have seen this sign:
Build The River Park. The Riverpark Coalition has been advocating to stop development of a storage facility and RV parking lot off Pacific Place, the abandoned golf driving range off the 405 and 710 interchange by the LA River. Instead, Riverpark Coalition, along with many members of the local community, are championing a plan to transform the precious land into an open green space for all.
A common misperception about the LA River is that it is not actually a river but is merely a concrete water channel or a storm drain. But if you ask any local environmental advocate or native Angeleno about the river they will happily tell you about the unique bird watching, kayaking, biking, or even fishing. (Though none of us would dare eat the fish.) Many years before the Army Corps of Engineers paved the river in the 1930s, it provided food and water to the indigenous T ....
