State Highway 1 in Marlborough is reopening and evacuated residents from three settlements have been told they can return home from lunchtime on Sunday.
But on the other side of the island, West Coast residents face heartache, with flood-ravaged streets and homes.
The Marlborough District Council said State Highway 1, including the Wairau River Bridge, was expected to reopen from midday on Sunday. "All evacuated residents from Tuamarina, Spring Creek and the Lower Wairau can return to their homes from midday."

”Contractors are aiming to re-open SH1 by midday and we expect to re-open a route through to Nelson by the end of the day via SH6 and SH65. We are also assessing flood damage on SH7 north of Hanmer this morning which completes this critical link.”
The damage was still being assessed, and it was too early to say when other roads would be reopened, she said.
Anyone driving would need to take extra care as there was still surface flooding and debris on the roads.

Waka Kotahi contractors are beginning the hard work of re-connecting South Island communities cut off by this weekend’s massive weather event as flood waters begin to recede.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Journey Manager Tresca Forrester says crews have been out since first light assessing road damage, inspecting bridges and clearing debris from blocked and flooded highways.

Waka Kotahi contractors began work at daybreak clearing debris, assessing damage and re-opening roads where they can.
Roads that have reopened include SH1 between Picton and Blenheim, and SH7 both from Reefton to Springs Junction and from from the Hanmer Turnoff to Springs Junction, the Lewis Pass.
SH6 between Blenheim and Nelson expected to re-open from Renwick to Rai Valley, and SH6 between Murchison and Kawatiri/SH65 Shenandoah should reopen in the next few hours..
The only South Island roads that are expected to remain closed overnight are SH6 through the Lower and Upper Buller Gorge, and SH63 from Renwick to Tophouse Road.

More rain expected in flood-stricken areas, but the worst is over

According to MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan, some weather stations in the Buller area had recorded more than 300 millimetres of rain since early Friday.
As of 3pm on Sunday, 158mm of rain had fallen in Westport, while Reefton, in inland Buller, received 168mm of rain.
Corrigan said weather stations higher up in the ranges, towards Murchison and Nelson Lakes National Park, recorded rainfall in excess of 300mm over 60 hours.

The Ferry Rd Bridge at Spring Creek in Marlborough, where heavy rain has caused widespread flooding.
On Sunday afternoon, rain in the Buller district was easing and residents could expect a dry day on Monday and Tuesday.
