REAP: assessing if my application will be successful

While farmers and advisers are still acquainting themselves with the workings of the Results-based Environment-Agri Pilot (REAP) scheme, initial reports suggest there is a high level of interest.
A high percentage of the queries surfacing to date regard how likely an application is to be accepted into the pilot scheme.
This is because it has a maximum capacity of 2,000 participants and farmers are querying how the scoring card for the main measures will be handled.

Advisers set for busy period of REAP and BPS applications

Advisers facing a busy period of BPS applications are now preparing to take on the added workload of applications for the new €10m agri-environmental scheme.
The results-based environment-agri pilot (REAP) opened for application on Wednesday 21 April and closes on Monday 10 May.
The dates coincide with the busiest time for advisers submitting BPS applications ahead of its 15 May deadline.
Despite some initial concerns, the Agricultural Consultants Association (ACA) whose members advise 55,000 farmers, has welcomed the pilot.

“This is an exceptionally busy period for our members and we were concerned that other important work would be undermined by the launch of REAP,” ACA president Tom Canning said. ....

Kalonji: Sowing the black seeds to reap big profits

HYDERABAD: Every year, Hajan Leghari, a farmer in Village Kandri near Jhudo, spares a small piece of land to cultivate kalonji (Nigella sativa) for its black seeds that have been being consumed as seasoning and as herbal medicine for the last 2000 years – it was found in the tomb of a pharaoh.
“Whenever harvest starts in March our relatives and family friends expect us to give them a little amount of black seeds for use,” Leghari said.
Families would keep kalonji in their kitchens for different purposes, mostly for its health benefits, he said.
Leghari said though agriculture was rapidly changing with the introduction of technology, hybrid seeds for crops, and high density varieties of fruits, some farmers were still cultivating these traditional crops, which needed little water and fertiliser. ....
