Remember the ‘Sutta Pazham’ scene from Gemini’s 1953 film
Avvaiyar? To many it remains the iconic moment in the movie. While it is true that K.B. Sundarambal largely carried the film, its success also had much to do with S.S. Vasan keeping a finger on the public pulse when it came to production values and pre-release publicity. The ‘Sutta Pazham’ scene, which lasts all of ten minutes, however, belonged entirely to P.N. Kumar, who played the role of Balamurugan in it. He, in fact, greatly influenced the way the youthful South Indian deity would be depicted thereafter in films, calendar art and statuary. ....

The ‘Remembering Rukminidevi’ festival at Kalakshetra commemorated her ideas
The curtain call is the same. The actors are different. As the lights dim on the final scene for the closing benediction, the Kalakshetra artistes arrange themselves in a semi-circle and take a bow.
I remember Rukminidevi Arundale going up on the stage, year after year, glowing in the aftermath of a performance she had carefully put together. Perhaps thinking of the long hours she had spent on every detail the story line, research, music , choreography, training, costume, jewellery and that carefully rehearsed final bow. Her husband George Arundale wrote of her “engaging in every possible effort to ensure absolute perfection in tradition and in every detail of presentation.” ....

On her birth anniversary, a relook at the dancer-choreographer’s monumental vision for dance
Had 2021 been a leap year, February 29th would have marked the 117th birth anniversary of Rukmini Devi Arundale. In the discourse around dance, its history and current understanding, her name constantly resurfaces. Rukmini Devi Arundale is not a forgotten figure in history. And nor should she be. But given the nature of these discourses, I wonder if Rukmini Devi is adequately understood and remembered.
Many practitioners, scholars and admirers have recently appealed for Rukmini Devi’s legacy to be left alone saying that she does not need to be feted or critiqued further. While no public figure can escape scrutiny, I wholly sympathise with the frustration of those who knew and understood her. The constant ....

A new documentary traces the life of dance guru, choreographer and musician Prof. C.V. Chandrasekhar, whose pursuit of dance remains pure and unsullied
When you speak of Professor C.V. Chandrasekhar, Bharatanatyam exponent and guru, music composer who is adept in both systems of Carnatic and Hindustani, and a choreographer, it is difficult to steer clear of the cliché, ‘a legend in his lifetime’. Memories of the maestro in his heyday resurfaced recently when a film, ....
