Sheep and goats at the fair this year will be plentiful in Pratt County

After an insanely different fair atmosphere last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pratt County 4-Hers and others who participate in the Pratt County Fair regularly are putting in place place plans for business-as-usual event in 2021.
On May 7, the annual small animal weigh-in was held at the fairgrounds. Setting a record-high, 44 sheep and 43 goats were weighed and tagged for fair participation by Pratt County 4-Hers. All 4-H members enrolled in the sheep and goat projects were required to bring their animals to the weigh-in to be eligible to be shown at the Pratt County Fair.
Pratt County Extension Agent Jodi Drake said that the animals get an official 4-H e-ID ear tag and they go across the scales. If 4-H members want to show their animals at the Kansas State Fair or the Kansas Junior Livestock Show, they must also nominate their animals by filling out a form, obtaining DNA samples, and submitting a fee to the State Fair of ....

Students who love agriculture finding ways to plug into new club

On March 29, 2021, the Pratt High FFA Chapter became officially recognized at the Chapter Banquet. Agricultural programs and classes at PHS are in their inaugural year. The Chapter signing was an appropriate way to end the first FFA year and begin to look ahead to next year’s adventures. Sterling Rector, President of the newly formed chapter, said that the chapter signing made the Pratt FFA Chapter an official, chartered chapter in the state of Kansas and that every new chapter gets this opportunity when they join the FFA organization.
“I joined FFA because I love agriculture,” Rector said, “However, that is not all FFA is about. There are so many activities to participate in. One of my favorites is meat judging. The opportunity to gain leadership skills and responsibility is endless. I really enjoy that part too, because those are good skills to have going forward in life.” ....

Several summers ago, Kanza Coop sponsored me to attend the Kansas Cooperative Council leadership camp at Rock Springs 4H Center. One of Kanza’s primary goals was to invest in youth to ensure a strong future for the cooperative. The camp was in its first year, and Kanza sponsored me because my father is on the Board of Directors, and my family has been longtime members of Kanza. I have also always enjoyed strengthening my leadership skills, whether it be through 4H, at school, or in the community. Here is what I learned about coops:

Two Pratt High School activity groups made presentations at the April 12, 2021 meeting of the Pratt USD 382 Board of Education, extending the timein session but enlightening those in attendance as to what these groups have been up to. Board of Education President Bill Bergner called the meeting to order at the ACE building, noting the attendance of Pratt High Student Council representatives.
First on the agenda was the PHS Robotics team, who gave a presentation about their club and the recent awards they won this past season. The presentation was led by Andrew Van Slyke (jr), team manager, Nick Vail (sr), head programmer, and Mr. Heath Sharp (advisor). The Robotics team has been at PHS since 2006, and they have competed through several organizations throughout the years. This year, robotics looked a little different due to COVID-19.
