A MOTORING menace drove directly at an unmarked police car after performing a sudden 180-degree U-turn but swiftly conceded when detained that he had been “an idiot”.
‪Carlisle Crown Court was told of 36-year-old Robert David Ashbridge’s “appalling” rap sheet, of his first driving offence at the age of just 13 and that he had never passed a test.
‪But on the night of November 3, seeking to make a quick profit on a Vauxhall Astra amid repeated demands from bailiffs, Ashbridge got behind the wheel again in Cleator Moor.
‪This was seen at 10.40pm by uniformed police officers inside an unmarked patrol car who heard the Astra being revved. It approached from behind, coming within a foot of the vehicle before pulling into the opposite carriageway and overtaking at 50mph in a 30mph zone. ....

A WORKINGTON man jailed after he was caught carrying a knife outside a shop in the town has been freed on appeal.
After hearing te background to the prosecution of 34-year-old Warran Bragg, a judge and two magistrates decided to suspend the six months jail term he had earlier been given.
Carlisle Crown Court heard that Bragg, of Purser Road, Salterbeck, was jailed by magistrates after they were told about the defendant being arrested outside the Spar shop in Westfield Drive, Workington, on October 21 last year.
He had denied the offence but was convicted after a trial. ....

A FORTY-five-year-old Workington man has been warned that he could be jailed after he admitted two charges of downloading indecent photos of children.
Martyn Fletcher, who committed the offences between January 20, 2017, and May 17 of last year, was told by a judge at Carlisle Crown Court that he will now have his name put on to the Sex Offenders Register.
The defendant, of Bowness Court, Workington, admitted downloading 132 indecent child images on his HP laptop computer.
Those images were classified as Category C - the least serious class of indecent child images. The second charge he admitted related to 13 Category C moving images which he downloaded on a Samsung phone. ....
