STROKESTOP: Small Clinical Benefit Seen With Systematic AF Screening

April 26, 2021
A population-based screening program for atrial fibrillation (AF) improved clinical outcomes in 75- and 76-year-olds living in two regions of Sweden, the randomized STROKESTOP shows.
Over more than 5 years of follow-up, risk of the combined primary endpoint of ischemic stroke, systemic thromboembolism, all-cause mortality, hemorrhagic stroke, or hospitalization for bleeding was significantly lower in the group invited for screening (HR 0.96;
P = 0.045), according to Emma Svennberg, MD, PhD (Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden).
The number of people who would have to be invited for screening in order to prevent one event is 91, she reported last week during the virtual European Heart Rhythm Association Congress 2021. ....

Screening for most common heart rhythm disorder does not occur in Europe

Sophia Antipolis – 25 April 2021
:  There are no screening programmes for atrial fibrillation in Europe, according to a study presented at EHRA 2021, an online scientific congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).
1
Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder, affecting more than 40 million individuals globally.
2 People with the disorder have a five times greater risk of stroke. Symptoms of atrial fibrillation include palpitations, fatigue, and chest pain.
Interviews with regulators and leading healthcare professionals, conducted by the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) of the ESC, lay the groundwork for
AFFECT-EU, a large-scale EU funded project to detect atrial fibrillation and prevent subsequent strokes and death. ....

Ask Dr. Scott: Fostering heart health: How important is exercise?

Ask Dr. Scott: Fostering heart health: How important is exercise?
Ask Dr. Scott: Dr. Scott T. Anderson
February is American Heart Month, so designated by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. We are reminded that heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Moreover, we can diminish this risk through exercise, described in Heart Month literature as 30 minutes a day, six days a week of aerobic activity, with occasional strength building.
Healthy dietary habits and smoking cessation are also important, as is treatment of hypertension and high cholesterol. Prevention of obesity is a challenge as well. We are stuck with our family history, which also influences our heart attack risk. ....

One alcoholic drink per day can increase risk of atrial fibrillation: Study

Washington [US], January 23 (ANI): A recent study revealed that individuals who regularly drink a humble measure of liquor are at a higher risk of atrial fibrillation, a condition where the heart pulsates in a strange rhythm.
The study, published in the European Heart Journal found that, compared to drinking no alcohol at all, just one alcoholic drink a day was linked to a 16 per cent increased risk of atrial fibrillation over an average (median) follow-up time of nearly 14 years.
This means that while four teetotallers in 100 might develop atrial fibrillation over the period of the study, five per 100 might develop the condition if they consumed alcohol starting with slightly more than an alcoholic drink a week and more than 75 per cent of them consumed up to one drink a day. ....

Washington [US], January 19 (ANI): A study of nearly 108,000 people has found that people who regularly drink a modest amount of alcohol are at increased risk of atrial fibrillation, a condition where the heart beats in an abnormal rhythm.
The study, published in the European Heart Journal found that, compared to drinking no alcohol at all, just one alcoholic drink a day was linked to a 16% increased risk of atrial fibrillation over an average (median) follow-up time of nearly 14 years.
