Eagle River Watershed Council to host educational event on the Homestake Valley

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 22, Eagle River Watershed Council will host educational hikes in the Homestake Valley. Registration is required, as well as becoming a Homestake Sponsor, which is a $25 membership. The event, Hike at Homestake, is part of the Watershed Council’s signature Watershed Immersion series.
Along the 3-mile, round-trip hike, which is moderate, participants will learn from experts about the unique ecology of the area, river hydrology, water rights, dams, transmountain diversions, the importance of wilderness and more. Due to federal regulations regarding wilderness areas, hikes will be staggered and groups will be limited to 15 people. Groups will depart at 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. from the Whitney Creek Trailhead. Experts: Low-head dams a threat to safety nationwide

Low-head dams, such as the 8-foot-high structure at Duke Energyâs Dan River Steam Station, are a threat to public safety, claiming nearly 50 lives nationwide each year, say civil engineers and dam safety advocates.
Their aim: to educate the public about the hazards of low-head dams and convince dam owners to rehabilitate the structures.
On June 16, nine members of an Eden family set out on the Dan River in tubes for a two-hour float that turned deadly when the group went over the Duke Energy dam.
Four survived, and rescue teams worked for five days to recover the bodies of four of five missing tubers, including a 7-year-old boy. The search for Teresa Villano, 35, continued this past week near Draper Landing along the Dan River along N.C. 700. ....

After a brief business meeting, Dianne Scialla will present “Heavenly Splendor: The Baths of Caracalla.” The talk will be recorded.
Scialla works for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. For the last 25 years, she has researched Roman architecture and art in Rome and Naples. In 2012, she was introduced to the conservation curators of Pompei and Herculaneum and has furthered her understanding of Roman art and culture in the Bay of Naples.
