Doctor who raised concerns about cancer rates downstream from oilsands wins whistleblower award

I m simply doing my job, said O Connor. But I really appreciate the recognition.
He said he was stunned to find out he was receiving the award, though he doesn t see himself as a whistleblower, rather an advocate.
O Connor, who worked as a physician in Fort Chipewyan, said people in the community would tell him they were concerned about how sick people were getting. O Connor said he started to notice that a disproportionate number of people were getting both rare and common cancers.
Elder Alice Rigney said people would talk about the health issues at a community level, but O Connor spoke out for us. ....

Alberta s whistleblower protection law should apply to more public entities and those who contract with the province, and should be strengthened to protect complainants from being sued, the public interest commissioner told a legislative committee earlier this month.
On. Feb. 4, commissioner Marianne Ryan appeared before the legislature s standing committee on resource stewardship to present her office s recommended changes to the whistleblower protection act. This legislation came into effect in 2013 and is undergoing its second mandatory review. ....

It is no coincidence that the IHRA definition of antisemitism is being advanced in Canada amidst an increasingly hostile environment toward critics of Israel.

In 2019, under the guise of combating racism and bigotry, Canada adopted the highly problematic definition of antisemitism promulgated by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), which conflates political criticism of the state of Israel with anti-Jewish bigotry.
Under this working definition, legitimate critiques of Israel and its policies, such as “claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor,” may be condemned as antisemitic. Many critics have rightly warned that these provisions threaten the free speech rights of Canadians and will likely be used to silence criticism of Israel. ....
