Valley Metro seeking artists to design new NW Roanoke bus stops

ROANOKE, Va. – Four new bus stop shelters are coming to Roanoke, and the city is looking for artists to bring some creativity to the community.
The Roanoke Arts Commission and Valley Metro joined forces on this public art project. Artists will have the chance to share their creative vision within the bus stop shelters and on the ground in front of them.
All four new shelters are in northwest Roanoke. Two are located at the corner of 11th Street and Moorman Avenue, and the other two are located on Melrose Avenue by Melrose Hardware. ....

ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke is celebrating Black History through hip hop.
From the rappers to the video and music production, the “We Are Art” rap cypher brings together Black talent from the area to share a powerful message.
With lyrics like, “Acting hard is an ugly façade. We need love in the forefront, not just in the market or the storefront,” the idea is to show Roanoke is for everyone.
The video was filmed at the Grandin Theatre and features seven local rappers, each of them writing a verse saluting Black art, culture and accomplishments. ....

Arts & Extras: Roanoke was frequent port of call for 'Gilligan's Island' star


Dawn Wells once appeared daily on Roanoke Valley televisions in the role of Mary Ann, the down home farm girl trapped with six other castaways on the “Gilligan’s Island” sitcom, which made millions more fans in syndication than it ever did during its original 1964-67 run on CBS.
During the last years of her life, it wasn’t at all uncommon for Wells to visit the Roanoke Valley in person.
On Dec. 30, at age 82, Wells became one of the most famous people in the United States to die from COVID-19-related causes. In marking the tragedy, major news outlets underscored how the actress leaned into her most famous character’s wholesome image, noting that she released an advice book in 2014 called “What Would Mary Ann Do? A Guide to Life.” ....
