Funds from Mountain Valley Pipeline awarded for Carvins Cove land, other projects


The entire shoreline of the Carvins Cove Reservoir could soon be in public hands.
A $175,000 grant from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation will initiate talks with the owners of a 46-acre tract at the reservoir’s southern tip — the last remaining privately owned piece of waterfront property.
The grant was awarded to the Western Virginia Water Authority, which co-owns and manages the reservoir and a surrounding 12,700-acre natural reserve with the city of Roanoke.
“Carvins Cove is the primary source of drinking water for residents in the valley, and land conservation activities such as these protect water quality and expand low-impact recreational activities in the valley,” read a statement released Monday by authority spokeswoman Sarah Baumgardner. ....

Rob Neukirch of Floyd spied the headline above last Tuesday’s column — “In defense of Reps. Ben Cline and Morgan Griffith” — on his phone. It was accompanied by a sinking feeling.
He thought, “Oh no, what’s happened to Dan?” Neukirch wrote in an email. Then he read the rest of the column, which appeared five days after April 1.
“You got me!” he wrote.
His missive was among scores emails, phone calls and online comments regarding the column. Which means it’s time for the April reader mailbag.
The tongue-in-cheek defense of Western Virginia’s representatives followed an onslaught of unkind Letters to the Editor published in this newspaper. Most indicated disgust with Cline’s and Griffith’s support of “Stop the Steal” efforts to overturn the election of President Joe Biden. ....

Mill Mountain Zoo welcomes new black bear
Meet 10-year-old Hyde

ROANOKE, Va. – Mill Mountain Zoo made the big reveal today by introducing a new face, Hyde the black bear.
Hyde was brought in from Wright Park Zoo in Dodge City, Kansas where she lived since she was three months old. She was born in captivity.
At just 10 years old, Hyde weighs 350 pounds.
From renovating her enclosure and the observation deck for her visitors, Hyde’s arrival is the zoo’s biggest project since the enclosure for Ruby, the tiger.
It was a two-year process but now that she’s here the zoo plans to incorporate her into their Virginia wildlife. ....
