The Buick GS 400 was offered for the 1969 model year as either a hardtop or convertible. It could be had in standard 400 cubic-inch configuration producing 340 horsepower, or Stage 1 dress with 10.25:1 compression ratio, ram air intake, four-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carb and dual exhaust producing 350 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Backing the 400 was either a four-speed manual or three-speed Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission. The Buick GS was produced exclusively at GM’s Fremont, California assembly plant.
Our feature car is one of only three finished in rare and lustrous Fireglow Orange Metallic paint, which was only available at the end of the 1969 model year. The paint has been done to a high standard as part of a frame-off rotisserie restoration. Both front and rear chrome bumpers have been re-plated, and the stainless trim has been polished to a fault. The five-spoke GS Rally wheels are wrapped in Firestone redline bias-ply tires. ....

Q: Hello, Greg. I just read your article on nostalgia from the ’50s and ’60s and wanted to share an experience from about five years ago. My wife and I were taking my 1966 El Camino to the Devil s Run car show in North Dakota when the car started running terribly. It was very low on power and backfiring whenever we had to go up a small hill or anything that put a load on the engine.
We were on Highway 2 heading west and decided to pull into the little town of Michigan, North Dakota, where there sat this old-time gas station and we pulled in. I had a good guess what was wrong with the car and asked if I could borrow a set of feeler gauges as I was sure that my ignition points had closed up. The young man I talked to said to go ahead and take what I needed out of his toolbox. ....
