A Morgan County man was sentenced today to spend the rest of his life in prison for the 2015 murder of his ex-wife at her bakery in Decatur.
Roger Dale Stevens, 68, was convicted of capital murder last month for the killing of Kay Letson Stevens. Kay Stevens was 62 when she was shot to death at the Corner Bakery on Nov. 14, 2015 a day after her divorce was finalized. Prosecutors said Roger Stevens killed his ex-wife because “she got everything” in the final divorce decree.
“The love of money is the root of all evil, and Kay Stevens felt the full brunt of that evil that day,” said Morgan County District Attorney Scott Anderson, who prosecuted the case with Assistant DA Paul Matthews. ....

Roger Dale Stevens, convicted of shooting his ex-wife to death at her Decatur bakery five years ago, will spend the rest of his life in an Alabama prison.
Stevens, 68, was sentenced this morning by Morgan County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Howell after his conviction last month of capital murder for killing Kay Letson Stevens, 64, outside the Corner Bakery and Eatery on Sommerville Road.
Life without parole was the only sentencing option available to Howell after Morgan County District Attorney Scott Anderson decided to not to seek the death penalty.
âThere are no winners in this,â Brenda Suggs, who was Kay Stevensâ sister and business partner, said after todayâs 40-minute hearing. ....

DECATUR, Ala. (AP) An Alabama man convicted of killing his former wife at her business the day after their divorce became final has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
A Morgan County judge handed down the penalty to Roger Dale Stevens, 68, during a hearing Wednesday, the Decatur Daily reported.
Stevens was convicted of capital murder last month in the death of Kay Letson Stevens, 64. She was shot to death outside her bakery in Decatur in November 2015.

The couple’s divorce had become final the day before the killing, and witness Brenda Suggs, who was Stevens’ sister and business partner, testified earlier that the man complained that his former wife got everything in the split. Stevens shot the woman and then beat her head against a curb, evidence showed. ....

DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) - A Morgan County man found guilty of capital murder in November received a life sentence on Wednesday.
Judge Jennifer Howell sentenced Roger Stevens to life in prison without the possibility of parole on December 16.
The victim in the shooting was his ex-wife Kay Stevens. Kay’s niece Edie and District Attorney Scott Anderson both spoke during the sentencing hearing on Wednesday.
