PROVIDENCE In close committee votes Monday, the Rhode Island House and Senate advanced bills that would outlaw “straw purchases” of guns and prohibit firearms on school grounds, but a legislator withdrew another gun bill after it was “gutted.”
House and Senate leaders had reached agreement on four gun bills that appeared to be headed to a final vote in the waning days of this year’s legislative session, including a bill that would require enhanced reporting by the attorney general on gun crimes. ....

Just 90 minutes after a gunman killed 9 men and women in San Jose, Linda Finn of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence appeared on GoLocal LIVE to discuss what the group says is the need for the passage of critical legislation in Rhode Island. 
Finn says the majority of members of the House and Senate support the passage of legislation and that it is critical for supporters to focus pressure on Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and Speaker of the House Joe Shekarchi.
There are three major bills that have a strong potential for passage in 2021 legislation that bans high capacity magazines, another bill that places restrictions on straw purchasers, and legislation to prohibit guns in schools. ....

Would gun control have prevented the recent shootings in Rhode Island?

Four shootings in four days have rattled Rhode Island. Police have seized twice as many illegal firearms so far this week as they did last year.
On Monday morning, Rhode Island’s US Congressional delegation joined Governor Dan McKee, Attorney General Peter Neronha, Providence Mayor Jorge O. Elorza, Nonviolence Institute Executive Director Cedric Huntley, and Moms Demand Action activist Diana Garlington at the Nonviolence Institute’s headquarters.
There, Huntley said the last several days have “just not been normal.”
“We’ve been working around the clock to help those victims, those families that have been hurt by violence,” said Huntley. “There’s no words for what we see.” ....
