King County pays $500,000 to man acquitted of murder charge

King County pays $500,000 to man acquitted of murder charge

SEATTLE (AP) — King County has agreed to pay $500,000 to settle a civil-rights lawsuit filed by a man who spent two years in jail awaiting trial on homicide charges, only to be acquitted by a jury.
The Seattle Tmes reports the judge found evidence detectives cherry-picked evidence and included “false and misleading” statements in court documents.
Rodney Wheeler, in a federal lawsuit filed in 2019, insisted he was targeted and prosecuted for a homicide “he did not commit and had no involvement with whatsoever.”
The lawsuit alleged King County sheriff’s detectives “made false statements and omitted important facts that would have undermined their allegations” that he shot a man outside a Motel 6 in SeaTac following an argument in August 2016.

Rodney Wheeler Said Wife Julie Wheeler Fell Off Cliff. She Actually Faked Her Death To Avoid Prison

Shoe, cellphone at the base of the cliff had been planted by the couple, police said. (Representational)
Last May, Rodney Wheeler dialed 911 with a frantic plea for help: His wife had just plunged hundreds of feet over a steep cliff in a West Virginia national park.
Authorities quickly launched a massive search for Julie Wheeler, 44. For days, hundreds of volunteers, police, and professional rescuers trekked along the base of the New River where her husband said she'd fallen, aided by helicopters and rescue dogs.
But Julie Wheeler had never gone missing. Three days after she supposedly fell off a cliff, authorities found her hiding inside a closet in the couple's Beaver, W.Va. home.

West Virginia Couple Jailed for Elaborate Con to Fake Her Death

A West Virginia couple were jailed for hatching an elaborate scheme to fake the woman's death.
The duo concocted a plan to make police believe that Julie Wheeler had fallen off a steep cliff.
They planned to run away together to avoid her going to jail for healthcare fraud.
"Almost heaven, West Virginia" has taken on a new meaning after a husband-and-wife duo was sentenced on Monday for an elaborate con to fake the woman's death in an attempt to help her dodge a jail term.
A dramatic search-and-rescue operation was launched last May when Rodney Wheeler, 48, phoned 911 — claiming frantically that his wife had fallen off a cliff while they were hiking at Grandview Overlook in the New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia.
