But that night, as Congress regrouped to certify the results of the 2020 election, 147 Republican members of the House and Senate voted not to certify certain states’ electoral votes, despite dozens of court decisions rejecting challenges to voting in those states. ....

Possible hundreds of billions in US power plant securitizations spur ratepayer protection debate

Share it
Securitization is a financial tool that can reduce utility debt with low interest bonds secured by ratepayers, and with utilities  growing costs related to COVID-19, the energy transition, and climate change, interest is accelerating.
But utilities and their customers are facing hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars in such costs, which is raising oversight concerns. When oversight has been introduced, it has led to lower interest rates and lower transaction costs, stakeholders in such proceedings told Utility Dive.
Duke Energy s $1 billion proposal to use securitization to meet storm recovery expenses in North Carolina provides the criteria necessary for the commission to evaluate Duke Energy s proposed transactions, Duke spokesperson Meredith Archie said in an email. It allows the commission to determine whether and to what extent it wants to be involved in the transaction once it issues its order. ....

SCE settles 2018 wildfire insurance claims for $2.2B, faces potential fines over energy efficiency program

Dive Brief:
Southern California Edison has agreed to pay $2.2 billion to resolve subrogation claims filed by insurance companies related to the 2018 Woolsey Fire, which burned nearly 100,000 acres and caused three fatalities in Southern California, the utility announced Monday.
The latest settlement is another significant step toward resolving pending wildfire-related litigation, parent company Edison International s President and CEO Pedro Pizarro said in a statement. SCE has now resolved all subrogation claims related to the 2017 and 2018 fires and mudslides, and continues to explore reasonable settlement opportunities with other parties, Pizarro added.
The utility is simultaneously facing criticism for its management of its upstream lighting program, which offered manufacturer rebates to promote energy-efficient lightbulbs, prompting the agency s Public Advocates Office (Cal Advocates) to recommend financial penalties of $140 million. ....
