Sri Lanka- UNP backs DIG Bimshani Arachchi


(MENAFN - Colombo Gazette) e United National Party (UNP) has extended its support to the first female Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police in Sri Lanka, Bimshani Jasin Arachchi, following objections raised over her promotion as the DIG Police Welfare.
Nearly 32 Senior Superintendents of Police (SSP) have filed a Fundamental Rights petition against the promotion awarded to DIG Jasin Arachchi.
Commenting on the matter, former UNP Provincial Councilor, Shanthini Kongahage, extended her party s support to the Police officer who is currently facing opposition to her promotion.
Speaking to reporters in Kandy, Kongahage explained that under the UNP Government the 19th Amendment was introduced which enabled the National Police Commission to operate free of political influence. ....

Agartala, Feb 18 (UNI) BJP’s organisational secretary of northeast Ajay Jamwal arrived here last evening along with RSS regional in-charge Ullas Kulkarni, amid controversy triggered by Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb s statement that Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his stint as BJP s national president had once said though the party had come to power in several states, Nepal and Sri Lanka were still left.
Last night, Jamwal and Kulkarni held discussions with the Chief Minister and met with the party leaders over organisational issues, ongoing squabble between two factions of the party, dissidence against the Chief Minister and infighting among the workers in different parts of the state. ....

No defense agreement during Imran Khan's Lanka visit

Colombo, February 17: Sri Lanka and Pakistan will not be signing any defense agreement during the visit of the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to Sri Lanka from February 22 to 24, Lankan Foreign Secretary Adm.Prof.Jayanath Colombage said.
A number of agreements on economic cooperation, culture and other subjects are on the cards but none on defense, Adm.Colombage said.
He was asked to comment on a report in a Sunday newspaper that there would be an agreement on maritime security.
While Sri Lanka has been having naval exercises with India regularly under the SLINEX series, it has not had any such exercise with Pakistan either in the bilateral or the multilateral format, though Pakistani naval vessels have been visiting Colombo off and on. ....
