New flexible rail season tickets have been blasted as a real missed opportunity by passenger groups
They said level of discounts offered are unlikely to entice people back onto trains following pandemic
Much-heralded scheme offers savings on certain routes for passengers travelling two or three days a week
Flexible tickets, which can be used from June 28, will allow travel on any eight days in a 28-day period
But analysis today has found only limited savings for London commuters, including £1.78 from Stevenage

There are proposals for a cycle lanes on Haverstock Hill
- Credit: Archant
Is there really another way around?
Paul Allen, Haverstock Hill writes:
With regards to the proposed cycle lanes on Haverstock Hill, a number of letters have suggested that alternative routes exist. For the almost 10,000 people who live off Haverstock Hill, the hill is a fact of life and isn’t something that can be avoided. That is why the cycle lanes are needed, to allow adults and children to safely go at their own pace rather than being hassled by vehicles.
The direct route from Prince of Wales Road to Belsize Park is 800m. Any of the alternatives almost double the distance, require multiple turns and travel along roads that are far from quiet. These alternative roads are lined by parked cars and often have SUVs travelling in the middle of the road because they are too wide for their side. The alternative via South End Green would be the worst as it would be m ....

Romford Recorder letters: Ben Cohen, housing and St George's

Many years ago now I did A-level sociology and discovered that the greatest recipients of taxpayers’ money were the middle classes.
This doesn’t happen by accident: it’s the result of policies brought in by self-serving local and national government.
This proposed change to housing application policy is shameful.
All councillors representing local residents should vote against it and stop Havering becoming a borough that works against those most genuinely in need.
Time to see sense on house-building
Cllr Graham Williamson, South Hornchurch ward and co-chair PRESERVE, writes:
It is true that Havering and other boroughs have failed to meet their so-called housing needs (Borough failing to meet new homes targets, latest figures show, Recorder 29/01) but the picture is not all it seems.  ....

Letters: Traffic pollution, traffic jams, TfL and cladding

So let’s not go round definitively saying it’s just the LTNs causing congestion at times.
As for main roads, residents there also suffer noise and pollution from ever-increasing numbers of journeys on them.
Non-working drivers could support residents on main roads by avoiding making unnecessary journeys.
Road user pricing is probably the answer for main roads. There’s a price to be paid for driving, and the cost should be borne by drivers.
Reading material and just societies
Matt Canty, Islington, full address supplied, writes:
The people most vulnerable to respiratory disease and premature death from vehicle pollution are those that live and work on the busiest and most polluted streets. ....

Letters: BAME communities, cats, driving and Barnardo's

The poorest have suffered worst. Look at how people with disabilities have suffered disproportionately. Meanwhile racism, misogyny, homophobia and all the other prejudiced preconceptions have been given freedom to flourish.
When faced with this, minority communities draw together to rely on their own resources rather than trust the unreliable majority, and when these resources are religious ones they can be double edged.
The understandable rejection of all that is exemplified by establishment figures runs the risk of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. An all-enveloping religion can give great strength but can run the risk of drifting into fundamentalist rejection of the scientific rationality that underlies modern medicine. ....
