The Day - Area schools bolster summer program offerings - News from southeastern Connecticut

A school year marked by COVID-19 quarantines, virtual learning and increased absenteeism has resulted in a jump in the number of students in need of support.
In response, some school districts have expanded their summer school offerings to keep students engaged and help them catch up.
New London
Starting in July, the school system will offer all its students the opportunity to attend programs both in-person and virtual. It’s something that has never been done before and as of June 22, registration was at an all-time high of 640 students and growing.
The list of options and programs in New London is exhaustive – half-day, full day, half-week or full week options; small group and one-on-one counseling, tutoring and mentoring; high school credit recovery courses; supports for students to complete community service projects or compose resumes ; wellness events for staff; and engagement events for families. ....

High school student killed in shooting
NEW LONDON, Connecticut (WFSB) A high school student was shot and killed in the area of Grand and Elm Streets in New London on Wednesday night.
New London Public Schools superintendent Cynthia Ritchie did not identify the student in a statement on Thursday. However, she confirmed that the victim was a New London High School student.
“It is with the deepest regret and sadness that I inform you about the tragic and sudden loss of one of our high school students,” Ritchie said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and to the entire school community of which this student was a beloved part.” ....

New London Schools Closed for In-Person Learning Until February

School officials said they had 17 positive cases reported from Monday evening through this morning.
Based on the number of buildings recently affected, the number of students and staff who now need to quarantine and the time required for contact tracing, New London Public Schools will need to close all schools to in-person instruction through Jan. 29.
The Central Office building is also affected and will transfer to working remotely as well, the superintendent said.
All staff and students will have distance learning until Feb. 1, when the district plans to resume its hybrid model.
All students will receive live teaching throughout the day, including Wednesdays. ....
