The 18th century mansion house in East London facing an uncertain future | East London and West Essex Guardian Series

Have you ever heard of Walthamstow’s North Bank House? It is one of the area s remaining 18th century mansions, although it is perhaps easily missed, as it is now part of a cluster of former hospital buildings at the corner of Forest Road and Shernhall Street, better known as Thorpe Coombe Hospital.
North Bank occupied a great location, in what was then a rural part of Essex with views towards the Lea Valley and Epping Forest, yet was also alongside a thoroughfare (Clay Street, now Forest Road).
The three-storey house was originally almost square in plan with basement kitchens, although two-storey wings were later added to each side, one providing family accommodation, the other was a coach house. Opposite was a stable and a cowhouse; the cows grazed in the meadows opposite, roughly where Spruce Hills Road is. ....

It s January and we re at the start of another lengthy lockdown. Nick Richards looked at what got us through it last time.
You can t blame people for either looking back or looking forward while enduring lockdown. Looking back to when times were good and looking forward to when life is normal once again.
We ve gone back to old hobbies and taken up new ones to help us cope. But it s not been all about baking sourdough bread and learning how to use Zoom.
Personally I ve been seeking any ways I can to get my children off the TV or their devices and found a renewed interest in board games, jigsaws has helped, especially table top football game Subbuteo. ....

Tributes to Aldborough Hatch giant Ron Jeffries

Cllr John Howard, who grew up around the corner from Ron called him a giant in Aldborough Hatch who was immensely proud of the place he lived in.
He was always fair and was never short of a friendly word or a stern correction if he thought we needed it.
He always focused on how to make the area better; whether that was through charity, litter picks or standing up for what he thought was right.
Wes Streeting said if it weren t for Covid restrictions St Peter s Church would be packed to the rafters to pay tribute to Ron.
