Emails show Minneapolis police chief coordinated with PR pros to fight council, protect budget

Bill Rodriguez was the first speaker at the first public hearing on cutting funding to the Minneapolis Police Department. “We need both: the police and reform,” Rodriguez said at a City Council meeting in November.

Burien restaurant owners ask city to halt food truck pilot program, citing unfair competition

The Burien City Council passed a resolution to pilot a food truck program in the city on Monday despite over 50 brick-and-mortar restaurant owners signaling their opposition.
The resolution, which passed with a 5-2 vote, would allow food trucks to operate in the city limits for one year. However, the trucks would not be able to park within 50 feet of an existing restaurant without the business owner s permission.
That raised concerns for the city s restaurant owners who are worried that out-of-town food trucks will create more competition with their businesses that are already struggling amid the economic downturn of the COVID-19 pandemic and restricted dining options. ....

Hours after the Burien City Council voted 5-2 to proceed with a yearlong program to allow food trucks to operate in the city, dozens of local business owners said Tuesday that they plan to mobilize opposition to the initiative.
“If the City of Burien wants to see empty store fronts (and) empty businesses, that’s what they’re inviting,” said David Cruz, a board member for the Latin Business Association, which supported Empresarios Unidos and other advocacy groups that are challenging the food truck program. ....
