Housatonic Community College (HCC) held its 21st annual Sidewalk Art Festival yesterday. The event, originally planned to be held outdoors in the college’s downtown Bridgeport campus courtyard, included students, music and creativity.
“The number of students on campus this year is very limited, but we felt the need to still do something. This event is part of our tradition, and we wanted to bring some sense of life to the campus, some of that tradition back today,” said Geoffrey Sheehan, HCC Professor of Theater Arts who helped to plan the event. ....

Spring is at hand.
The flowering apricots have been spectacular this year. They are almost finished blooming in the Cape Fear Botanical Garden and in my garden, too.
A few Asian magnolias with basketball-sized, fragrant flowers are blooming now and many more should be open during the next two weeks.
A dozen spectacular Taiwan cherries are in bloom in my garden with very bright fuchsia pink to red colors.
Five chinese witch hazels are blooming here now and one has already finished.
I d like you to visit and see them all, especially the magnolias. Give me a call to arrange a tour. My address and phone number are at the bottom of this column. Most people have never seen these winter bloomers in flower. I don t know how I would survive the winter without the excitement, color and fragrance they provide. ....

This letter was signed by 201 community college faculty and staff, and five retired community college administrators and on behalf of the Connecticut Community College Round Table.
Following in the footsteps of her predecessor, Mark Ojakian, Connecticut State Colleges & Universities Interim President Jane Gates uses empty promises, misstatements, misdirection and magical thinking to yet again mislead the public about the rationale and promise of consolidating Connecticut’s 12 community colleges.
President Jane Gates’ op-ed, “Merger plan best course for community colleges,” argues that consolidating the community colleges is the best way to solve the dual crisis of persistent equity gaps and fiscal instability facing the system. ....
