Lafayette board greenlights Airbnbs in win for rental operators

In a win for short-term rental operators in Lafayette, the city’s Board of Zoning Adjustment upheld a decision greenlighting Airbnbs and other short-term rentals Thursday.
The Lafayette Development Code does not directly address short-term rental operations in single family-zoned areas, so the board’s decision leaves them up to the interpretation of Mayor-President Josh Guillory’s Development and Planning Director Mary Sliman.
Sliman, who took over as director in May 2020, has allowed Airbnbs and other short-term rentals to operate in single-family residential zones because they are not explicitly prohibited in those areas by the development code.
The board voted Thursday not to grant an appeal of Sliman’s determination about short-term rentals in the city, of which there are about 300, after a group of neighbors of one particular rental on Poinsetta Street sought to outlaw short-term rentals in single-family areas citywide in a dispute that stemmed from ....

Lafayette’s Board of Zoning Adjustment is set to decide next week whether local zoning rules permit short-term rentals, like Airbnb, to operate in residential neighborhoods.
The potentially fateful decision could impact some 300 Airbnb and other short-term rental listings in the city of Lafayette, based on data from AirDNA, a short-term rental market research company.
The board’s ruling, planned for April 8, could firmly define for the first time whether those rentals can be operated in areas zoned for single-family residential use, which cover many of the city’s neighborhoods.
Instead, LCG s Development and Planning Department has used that ambiguity to greenlight Airbnbs and the like to operate in single family zones since they aren t expressly prohibited by the Lafayette Development Code. ....

Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) announced the creation of a new bureau to expedite the processing of development code violations for the city and parish.
The new Administrative Adjudication Bureau will handle code enforcement citations which were previously addressed at Lafayette City Court.
LCG says that rather than bogging down the court system, the Development and Planning Department will now send citations to AAB Judge Travis Broussard who will manage violations in-house.
âIn the past our compliance process was long and arduous. With the new AAB, we will be quicker and more efficient in handling violations so that our city and parish residents can be proud of where they live,â LCG Development and Planning Department Director Mary Sliman said. ....
