LAGOS is currently groaning under the yoke of the burdensome activities of commercial motorcycle riders popularly called
okada. Combined with the equally menacing commercial tricycle (Keke Marwa) operators, they have become a major security threat in the state. The recent pledge by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to tackle the menace should therefore be followed through with determination.
Okada riders’ lawlessness and impunity in the state have gone overboard. To be fair, the administration inherited a messy, chaotic transport sector. Relative sanity instilled on the highways between 2010 and 2015 began to revert to lawlessness when the state government unwisely relaxed enforcement of traffic laws. Consequently, Sanwo-Olu’s vow to restore order and his new mass transit initiatives raise hope that the riders will soon be tamed. ....

Sanwo-Olu talks tough, mulls total ban on "Okada" operation in Lagos

As part of moves towards eradicating the menace of commercial motorcyclists, popularly called “Okada riders”Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said his administration has concluded plans to review the 2012 Lagos Traffic Law guiding their operations, as well as keeping Lagos safe, secure and peaceful.
Sanwo-Olu stated this on Monday, at the Stakeholders’ Meeting on Security, held in Alausa, Ikeja, organized by the state government.
The stakeholders’ meeting was aimed at putting the security agencies, communities and entire stakeholders at alert, towards making the state safer for residents to live and carry out daily activities within ambits of the law without any apprehension or fear. ....

Lagos rolls out 500 buses as alternative to okada

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that 500 Last-Mile Buses will be rolled out in the state.
According to the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, the rollout will continue until the state meets the target of 5,000 such buses.
The buses are to serve as an alternative means to get into inner streets as opposed to commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada.
Meanwhile, speaking at a stakeholder meeting on security in Alausa, Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu said his administration has concluded plans to review the 2012 Lagos Traffic Law guiding the operations of motorcycles in the state. ....
