Petition aims to stop the sale of city-owned land in Langford

LANGFORD, B.C.
The City of Langford bought a parcel of land at 1365 Goldstream Ave. more than a decade ago, with the idea of using it for highway improvement.
“But we don’t need it,” says Langford Mayor Stew Young. “Highways doesn’t need it. It’s just an orphaned piece of property.”
Now, the 4.6-acre site is up for sale, and that has angered some residents.
A local group called Langford Voters for Change has created a petition against the sale. Members want to see the land turned into park space instead.
The petition builds on a letter from Brian Belcher, a Langford resident, to the mayor. In the letter, Belcher argues that the area has ecological value and should be protected. ....

Langford building new community hub to fight 'general decline' of Station Avenue area

VICTORIA
The City of Langford has begun construction on a new community hub and dog park in the city s Station Avenue area.
The municipality says it s heard concerns from the community about the appearance and general decline of the area between Peatt Road and Veteran s Memorial Parkway for years, and has decided to revitalize the neighbourhood with a new community space.
The property will be developed into a recreational hub that includes spaces for small businesses and artisans, food trucks, public art, and other projects that focus on arts and culture.
The city also plans to build a new dog park and improve parking in the area for nearby businesses. ....

Are West Shore RCMP keeping up with demand as communities grow?

LANGFORD
Construction is everywhere within the West Shore, and with that construction comes people. Unfortunately, having more people in a community usually leads to more crime, putting a higher demand on police services.
“Our municipality has been growing by about 1,000 to 2,000 people per year,” said Langford Mayor Stew Young.
Calls for service to the West Shore RCMP have also risen with population growth.
“Usually, we see anywhere from a 15 to 17 per cent call volume increase per year,” said Const. Nancy Saggar with West Shore RCMP.
That’s exactly what that detachment saw in 2019.
“It’s nothing out of the ordinary that we’re experiencing here, but we are a larger community that is just getting larger,” said Saggar. ....
