( Jonathan Spiers photos) As a pair of new apartment buildings take shape nearby, another multifamily complex in the Brook Road corridor near Virginia Union University is getting underway. Demolition crews were active this week at the site of the planned Sphere Apartments, a 224-unit complex to be fitted between the Brook Road post office and adjacent Spectrum apartments. MVP Equities, a McLean-based private equity firm, is leading the $34 million project. RJ Smith is handling the demo for KBS, which is now the project’s general contractor. Cox, Kliewer & Co., out of Virginia Beach, is designing the apartments. ....

Doug Dunlap, who served as the city’s director of housing, community and development before leaving City Hall in March 2020, is applying for a rezoning on behalf of a property owner that wants to develop a mixed-use building with 52 apartments at 711 Dawn St. The half-acre site, at the corner of Tazewell Avenue just north of where it branches off from Chamberlayne, is across from Tabol Brewing, which opened its doors in 2019 as part of Chamberlayne Industrial Park. ....
