$15 Minimum Wage Movement sets agenda for coming months

The “Pay Us 15” initiative, founded by junior Barrah Shamoon, continues its effort towards raising student workers’ minimum wage in Spring Term, under the leaderships of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Sunrise Appleton and Student Liberation Front (SLF).
As of now, the initiative has set several agendas including approaching the Lawrence University Community Council (LUCC) at the end of this academic year and potentially forming a student worker union at Lawrence University in the next academic year, according to junior Terrance Freeman, the co-chair of SDS. The initiative will be consolidating more plans of action at the end of Spring Term, Freeman said. ....

The summer going into the 2020-21 school year, the Abolish Greek Life movement grew nationally and at Lawrence. Members of sororities and fraternities across the nation revoked their letters and their membership.
The “Abolish Greek Life” movement at Lawrence has become more prominent since summer 2020 when online infographics started spreading about the movement. Traction grew at the arrival of Fall Term, with nearly half of Lawrence’s sorority members disaffiliating. Around this time, some students involved in the movement at Lawrence created an Instagram page, @abolish.lu.greeklife, ran by multiple administrators, which has grown to 275 followers. ....

Student organizations collaborate to celebrate Black history

This year, a week of Honoring Black History will take place from Feb. 21 – 27. Several diversity organizations led by All is One! Empowering Young Women of Color (AIO) will come together to host events featuring speakers centered around Blackness and the theme of unity.
In previous years, People of Color (POC) Empowerment Week was celebrated in the last week of February and served as a time for diversity organizations to celebrate their groups. According to Black Student Union President, junior Sarah Navy, the change in name and emphasis on Black history took place because Lawrence had limited programming for Black History Month in the past. ....
