Rep. Vargas to Participate in Legislative Briefing Wednesday on Bill Requiring Free School Meals

Haverhill Rep. Andy X. Vargas participates in a legislative briefing Wednesday morning on a bill mandating schools “make breakfast and lunch available at no charge to each attending student.”
Besides lead House sponsor Vargas, the online briefing is organized by The Feed Kids Coalition, led by Project Bread, and Senate sponsor Sal DiDomenico. Speakers also include Project Bread CEO Erin McAleer, Athol-Royalston Regional School District Superintendent Darcy Fernandes Rebecca Wood, mother of an eight-year-old student.
The universal school meals bill requires local school districts to seek federal funding, but requires the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education pick up costs not covered by the federal government. ....

Groveland, Merrimac and West Newbury’s working group to determine how Pentucket Regional School District will return to five-day, in-person instruction this spring, met for the first time yesterday.
Members of what’s being called the “100% Pentucket” initiative noted social distancing is the “single greatest barrier that must be addressed in order for Pentucket schools to return to fully in-person learning.” A statement explained there is not enough room in existing buildings to accommodate all students at six-foot increments. Limiting invasive species may be a better goal than eliminating them, new research suggests
Managing invasive species not eliminating them altogether is a better use of time and conservation resources in many cases, according to a study led by a University of Alberta biologist.
Every year, hundreds of introduced species cause billions of dollars in damage to ecosystems, agriculture and infrastructure in North America alone. The research, led by Stephanie Green, makes a case for working smarter, not harder, to temper the impact of destructive and widespread invasive species using a strategy called functional eradication.

Four area lawmakers are flagging what they call a “dire situation” with rapid erosion at Salisbury Beach.
Sens. Diana DiZoglio and Bruce Tarr and Reps. Lenny Mirra and James Kelcourse wrote to Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Kathleen Theoharides last week, seeking a severe weather emergency declaration.
“This must be addressed as soon as possible,” the letter said. “We can use the example of what is happening in the Reservation Terrace area of the City of Newburyport as a reference of why immediate action must be taken. Residents there are seeing major flooding of their homes and destruction of their property. If we do not act quickly, we are going to see history repeat itself in Salisbury.” ....
