Laurel Highlands High School cheerleaders learn self-defense

Laurel Highlands High School cheerleaders learned some defensive moves that could save their lives at a team-building meet last week at the school.
Violence prevention instructor Don Witt, of Connellsville, taught the students the importance of knowing how to protect themselves and instructed them on several defensive moves they can use in perilous situations.
Janae Kopec, head coach, also invited mothers to attend Wednesday and learn alongside their daughters. She said she wanted to give the girls knowledge they could use far beyond high school.
âI think itâs very useful,â sophomore Ava Crofcheck said. âEven though Iâm practicing it with my friends, I feel like when it comes to a real situation, Iâll be able to at least know a little bit.â ....

Drone program offers job skills to Westmoreland, Fayette students

The Uniontown native, who graduated last month from Laurel Highlands High School, wants to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps that saw him serve in the U.S. Air Force and later earn a license to pilot a drone.
Sutton, 18, like her grandfather is certified to fly drones. She completed a training program earlier this year at the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette Inc. and then passed a test to earn her license.
“It’s a real competitive business and this gives me a head start,” Sutton said. “My grandfather had his own drone, flew his own drone. He did it for himself, it was a kind of privatized kind of thing. But I want to do this commercially because I thought it was kind of cool to work with drones.” ....

Penn State Fayette names outstanding alumnus, fellow

The Outstanding Alumnus award honors former students of the campus whose subsequent professional achievement warrants special recognition by their alma mater.
Mocniak grew up in Greene County and began his studies at Penn State Fayette in 1966, when the campus was located in downtown Uniontown. He earned an associateâs degree in electrical and electronic technology from Penn State Fayette in 1968 and a bachelorâs degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University Park in 1971.
Mocniak worked at Robicon Corporation, in Pittsburgh, as a design engineer, designing and developing drives and coordinated systems for various industries. He later transitioned to sales and marketing, positioning Robicon as the premier supplier of DC drive systems for retrofit of blast furnace skip hoist controls in the steel industry, for which he won an award. ....

Smithfield resident among valedictorians at Waynesburg U
Bailey Holt, a history (secondary education) major from Smithfield, was among five valedictorians at Waynesburg Universityâs graduation.
She was a recipient of the A.B. Miller Scholarship and was named to the deanâs list for all eight semesters.
During her undergraduate education, Holt completed certification to become a Certified Google Educator and published an Inquiry Design Model in the Teaching with Primary Sources Eastern Region, which is a partner with the Library of Congress.
Her future plans are to be a high school teacher. She will start immediately as a day-to-day substitute. ....
