Sending l'amour: Local students put French lessons into practice


Laurel Highlands Middle School students sent letters of love and well-wishes — written in French — to bring joy to hospice patients and residents in a retirement home in Québec, Canada.
French Club students in grades seven and eight wrote notes in holiday cards sent out around Christmas to the retirement home, Château Symmes, and wrote more to hospice patients at Société de Soins Palliatifs du Grand Montréal in Québec for Valentine’s Day.
French teacher Matthew Howard said he was looking for creative ways the students in the club could complete service projects during the pandemic. That’s when he noticed the retirement home posted photos online of residents holding signs with their names and address, asking people to write to them. ....

TeamHumanity Games starting
The TeamHumanity Games’ summer kickoff for students in grades 3 through 8 will be held Sunday, June 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Laurel Highlands’ football stadium, 300 Bailey Ave., Uniontown. Registration for the flag football competition is event day from 6 to 7 p.m. There is a $20 per player registration fee. Water Street Park fundraiser
The Water Street Park Group, led by Brownsville Area High School student Destiny Bock, is holding a fundraiser Saturday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fenwick Park’s playground in Brownsville. All proceeds benefit planned improvements for the park, which is located along Water Street. The event will feature food and crafts’ vendors, games for all ages, music by DJ Carla Furlong, basket auction and a Phoenix Mixed Martial Arts demonstration. Basket donations are being accepted. Jennifer Neill has been a teacher long enough that she’ll soon be seeing her former students’ children coming through her classroom at Laurel Highlands Middle School, and her students know what to expect from her.
“I’m like your school mom,” she said. “You’re not always going to like what I’m going to say, but I’m saying it for your benefit.”
The guidance she gives her students earned her a Champions of Learning Award for best educator of grades 7-12, presented this month by the Consortium for Public Education and United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. ....
