With a doctorate in chemistry and a prior job at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Cyndi Wells knew sooner than most the threat that COVID-19 posed for the country. As early as December 2019, as reports began surfacing of a virus in the Wuhan area in China, I kind of knew the storm was coming, she recalls.
Her pet supply store, which Wells opened in 2005 in Los Alamos County, New Mexico, while she still worked at the lab, would be considered an essential service, so she began prepping for keeping it open during a pandemic. We adopted masks quickly here, she says. Some of the bigger challenges were getting the supplies in. We got our hand sanitizer from a distillery that had pivoted to making hand sanitizer. ....

What can the ocean tell scientist about earthquakes? 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 17, Geophysicist Charlotte Rowe will discuss SMART (Science Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunication cables) virtually on WebEx, the next generation of oceanographic monitors that includes seismic sensors.
These special underwater telecommunications cables help a scientific task force fill in information gaps about seismic activity by gathering geophysical data from beneath the sea.
Rowe leads Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Geophysics focus area. She serves on the International Joint Task force for SMART Cables and the Global Seismographic Network Steering Committee and has served on the National Research Council. ....

Los Alamos County has had initiatives to foster a successful, thriving business community, including the recent effort to develop downtown master plans for Los Alamos and White Rock that reflect the community’s downtown goals and needs. An outcome will be an extensive update to the Chapter 16 Development Code, which governs development, including commercial development and redevelopment.
During the May 4 County Council meeting, another option was suggested.
