Los Angeles community members march for LGBTQ liberation

49 2 minutes read
On June 26, hundreds of people joined a Pride rally and unity march in Downtown Los Angeles organized by the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism). This celebration of LGBTQ struggle was the first Pride event organized by the ANSWER Coalition and was an opportunity to uplift the struggle in the midst of the recent upsurge in bigoted attacks on trans people and their rights with little to no media coverage.
The event was endorsed by many local organizations like Party for Socialism and Liberation Los Angeles, Trans Queer Liberation Movement, Union de Vecinos, Ground Game LA, The Peace and Freedom Party of CA, KPFK, Palms Up Academy | BASCO HOUSE, Progressive Asian Network for Action (PANA), UFCW770, Black Lives Matter Pasadena, AIM SoCal and many others. ....

Where to Find the Most Beautiful Blooming Trees in the L.A. Area

Although an import to the area, the South African coral tree (
Erythrina caffra) has been the official tree of the City of Los Angeles since Arbor Day, 1966 and one of the best places to see it in L.A. is along San Vicente Boulevard between 26th Street and Brigham Avenue, in the Brentwood Park section of Brentwood. This stretch of coral trees along the median, where the Red Line trolley once ran, was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976 and is funded and maintained by the Brentwood Community Council.

Declaring the historical record woefully incomplete, the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) and the city of Los Angeles today announced a three-year effort to identify, protect and celebrate local sites that are central to African American heritage.
Of the 1,200 places in Los Angeles designated as cultural or historic landmarks, the Getty and the city note, just over 3% are linked to African American heritage. “Having only about 40 feels well short of reflecting the totality and richness of African American heritage in the city,” says Ken Bernstein, principal city planner at the Los Angeles Department of City Planning and manager of its Office of Historic Resources (OHR), which is teaming with the Getty on the ....

Generous gifts saved Marionettes : Larchmont Chronicle

PUPPETEERS and clown puppets entertain family audiences as they have for 58 years in Los Angeles.
Bob Baker Marionette Theater (BBMT) is celebrating because its fundraising campaign “Keep Imagination Alive” has already met and even exceeded its $365,000 goal.
BBMT began the campaign in November in a desperate move to pay rent and keep the lights on, said Winona Bechtle, director of development. She added that the board and staff had fully expected the campaign to last far into this year, and only hoped to raise a third of the goal by the end of 2020.
Thanks to the community of fans who supported the puppet theater with contributions ranging from $5 up to some really, really generous gifts, said board treasurer and Brookside resident Vivian Gueler, BBMT can now, with the goal met, return from pure survival mode to concentrate on grant writing to help fulfill its programming and educational goals for 2021, said Bechtle. ....
