Arbor Day is always observed on the last Friday in April. This year, it’s April 30. Arbor Day is a national holiday created to recognize the importance of trees and the need to plant the right species in the right location. The city is working on that list to help our residents be well informed. It’s also a great day to take a hike at Oakdale Nature Preserve or visit one of our many wonderful parks to notice the many different tree varieties that our community has to offer.
It’s hard to believe that May is already upon us. With that, I’d like to mention a few events that are coming as people are eager to be out and about. Please remember to respect one another with social distancing. ....

Freeport City Council to honor Mickey Martin for service to city

FREEPORT Mickey Martin, a fourth-generation resident of Freeport, is ready to make a change in her life by moving closer to her family in Idaho.
Before she leaves the city she has given so much of her time to with civic and community service, Martin will be honored Monday by the City Council with a proclamation from Mayor Jodi Miller and a permanent plaque displayed at City Hall.
Martin, 81, was among the first women to serve on the City Council when she was elected in 1979, serving the 7th Ward. Martin said she remembers battling the mayor at the time and not being called on during meetings. She persevered and continued to fight for her community on the council until 1997. ....
