North East Lincolnshire leaders accused of "eroding" democracy after constitution changes

Opposition councillors at North East Lincolnshire have accused leaders of “eroding” democracy and “stitching up” scrutiny at the authority’s first post-COVID restrictions full council meeting.
During the meeting at Grimsby Auditorium on Thursday evening, councillors criticised changes to the constitution which required questions on scrutiny minutes to be submitted in advance.
They also hit out at the allocation of seats on committees, noting that there were six opposition members on scrutiny panels, while nine were placed on judicial groups such as planning or licensing.
Labour leader Councillor Matthew Patrick said the recommendations would result in the “erosion of accountability” and “undermine scrutiny”. ....

Highways chiefs have allocated Â£3m in funds to improve road safety at schools, including Â£90,000 to enforce parking restrictions.
The money will be spent maintaining the carriageways, footpaths and increase cycleways, North East Lincolnshire Council s cabinet were told.
The fund includes Â£90,000 specifically set aside to enforce parking restrictions outside schools, including the use of mobile CCTV vans to catch parents parking illegally.
North East Lincolnshire Council portfolio holder for environment and transport, Councillor Stewart Swinburn said officers will be educating people outside schools as part of the enforcement strategy. ....
