It’s time once again for children and adults to begin thinking about the Silver City Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, and while COVID-19 has forced the continuing closure of the library, preregistration for this popular, gift-laden program begins May 11.
The 2021 theme is animals “Tales and Tails” and participants are encouraged to share their summer animal adventures on social media.
Registration is available by calling the library at 538-3672, by email to [email protected] mail.com, or by sending a message on the library’s Facebook page. Staff require the name and age of each program participant. The 2021 program begins June 1, and reading logs must be submitted no later than July 16.

The town of Silver City received $500,000 in state capital improvement funds from this year’s legislative session for ongoing repairs to the Silver City Waterworks Building, originally built by a private company in 1887 to furnish water for the town’s first water supply system. Known as the “Rock House,” it is the only surviving stone building from this era in Silver City.

The recent session of the New Mexico Legislature proved successful for the town of Silver City and its list of capital improvement priorities, as the town is slated to receive nearly $2 million for various projects.
ROCKFORD The Rockford Housing Authority board voted unanimously Thursday to demolish the vacant Brewington Oaks housing development in the city’s ORCHiD neighborhood.
Commissioners awarded a $1.54 million demolition contract to N-TRAK Group of Loves Park to raze the twin 14-story towers at 505 and 515 Seminary Street.
“I feel we’ve done our due diligence in exploring other options,” RHA Board Chairperson Karen Hoffman said. “The issue has been before the board since February of 2020 and during this time it’s been the responsibility of RHA to physically and financially maintain this property.”
It’s unclear when demolition will begin, how long it will take and what if anything will be built on the Brewington Oaks footprint.
