Approving tuition rates and plans to improve the fiscal health of WSU Athletics were among the actions taken by the Board of Regents during their meeting Friday. Regents met for a series of hybrid in-person and virtual meetings this week on the campus of WSU Health Sciences Spokane. Following the graduation of the first class of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine students on Thursday, founding Dean Dr. John Tomkowiak highlighted some of their accomplishments, including a match rate of more than 96 percent. WSU Spokane Chancellor Daryll DeWald spotlighted students who’ve provided tens of thousands of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to community members across the state. He also called attention to significant gains in state support for research in the past five years. ....
Graduation celebrations are about to begin for students on the Washington State University Pullman campus. Close to 400 students are registered to participate in a drive-through graduation celebration on Saturday, May 1, beginning at 10 a.m., and over 100 students have signed up to participate in the virtual Multicultural Student Services (MSS) graduation celebration next week. The drive-through event is being planned by the Division of Student Affairs in partnership with Parking and Transportation Services, University Marketing and Communication, the university events team, and a number of others. Kim Holapa, associate vice president for external engagement and strategic initiatives in Student Affairs, said when the university made the decision to hold spring commencement virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions, WSU leaders wanted to do something extra to show graduates how proud WSU is of their accomplishments. ....
March 12, 2021 PULLMAN, Wash. The Washington State University Board of Regents voted today to stop requiring and using the SAT and ACT tests in the admissions process. The plan approved by regents also recommended that WSU no longer use SAT or ACT scores in the selection process for scholarships as well as tuition waivers. “This is the trend,” Provost and Executive Vice President Elizabeth Chilton said. “I think COVID just sort of pushed a number of colleges and universities a little further along because we saw that we were able to make informed decisions without those scores.” Chilton noted that years of scholarship has demonstrated significant issues of bias with standardized testing. Instead of using these scores, admissions officers will rely on metrics, including grade point average, that better reflect a potential student’s ability to succeed. ....
