Mid-Michigan Health Offering Vaccine Incentive for Employees May 27, 2021 A local hospital system is offering an incentive for their employees to get vaccinated against covid-19. Mid-Michigan Health is including any employees who get at least one dose of the vaccine by June 25th, in a raffle to win $1,000. They’ll choose ten winners in all. The hospital’s chief medical officer says 63% of all employees have received the vaccine, but they’d like to get that number to 70% or higher. “What we’re really hoping, is that some of the people that are on the fence, or are saying I want to wait just a little bit longer to see if more information pops up, that will convince them it’s okay to get, we’re hoping that it will drive that group towards just getting it done,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lydia Watson. ....
Neighborhood Food Champions Named In Indianapolis A local program that aims to increase community involved solutions to address food insecurity was launched this week. The 2021 Neighborhood Food Champions chosen for the program will receive training and mentorship to develop a food access project. The proposals from 15 recipients include gardens, pantries and farming initiatives. Participants will receive $2,000 to start their projects. This year’s program is broken up into two parts and includes four Neighborhood Food Builders, participants who have previous experience in the food system. The effort to strengthen local food systems with targeted neighborhood solutions started in 2017. The Indianapolis City-County Council recently increased the program’s funding to $70,000. ....

ALPENA The excitement surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine rollout quickly turned into frustration this week as thousands of Northeast Michiganders vied for an appointment to receive the vaccination. On Monday, the state made the vaccine available to thousands of Northeast Michiganders who are 65 years and older, essential frontline workers, or work with or care for children. When technical difficulties that day prevented residents from registering online for a vaccination appointment as they’d been told to do the local health departments received thousands of phone calls per hour. ....

Dr. Lydia Watson, M.D., chief medical officer and senior vice president of MidMichigan Health commented how administrating the vaccine has been very rewarding. “To have this vaccine given to our frontline staff, there has been every emotion shown. The clinics are going well,” Watson said. In addition to the initial allotment of 2,925 doses of the Pfizer vaccine, MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland received 1,950 doses last week and is expecting another shipment of 1,950 doses by Wednesday. ....
