THE rollout of the first low traffic neighbourhoods in Oxford has begun, with planters and bollards placed across residential roads to stop drivers using them as shortcuts. The Cowley LTN scheme, approved for a six-month trial by Oxfordshire County Council, is the first of its kind in the city or the county. In LTNs, bollards or planters are used to turn through-roads into cul-de-sacs to deter drivers from rat running, and the first of these traffic filters have now been put in place on roads in Cowley. The rollout began on Monday, March 1, and residents have said they have already started to notice the difference. ....

A cycling bollard in Cowley. PLANS to transform three areas of Cowley into Low Traffic Neighbourhoods will officially begin on Monday. The schemes, which aim to stop drivers using residential streets as shortcuts, and improve safety and air quality have been in the pipeline since last year. Now, after a consultation which found residents largely agree with the ideas behind the scheme, but also proposed some changes, rollout begins on March 1. Yvonne Constance, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We have listened to what transport and other changes local people want to be made and we are now taking action. Thanks to the feedback from residents, we can now implement scheme designs that are right for these communities. ....
