Littleton residents, water officials reach pact in disputed plant site


Nick Lawler, the department s general manager, announced groundbreaking is set for June 16, 11:30 a.m. with contractor, Winston Builders.
Gov. Charlie Baker signed into law on Nov. 20 legislation permitting use of the land at Whitcomb Avenue for the plant s construction.
The Legislature’s approval is needed because the land comes under provisions of Article 97 in state law which places conservation restrictions on some open spaces.
A long dispute
The settlement brings to a close litigation, in which residents filed a civil complaint at Middlesex Superior Court, with members of the Planning Board and Water Commission as defendants.
In November 2019, spokesman Robert Otto told the Eagle-Independent residents opposed locating the plant there because the land was to be protected in perpetuity. ....

Littleton frets over plan for invasive plant on conservation land

LITTLETON A plan to use herbicides to remove an invasive plant at Smith Conservation Land is causing worries about potential consequences, including to wildlife and drinking water.
Sudbury Valley Trustees representatives outlined the plan at a Littleton Select Board meeting on Dec. 7, held virtually due to coronavirus restrictions. 
The Select Board asked that the organization delay implementing the plan until an expected recertification of chemicals, including of an herbicide included in the plan.
A recertification is expected early in 2021.
Laura Mattei, the organization s stewardship director, said they will take the Select Board s request under advisement and respond by the week s end. ....
