Ailey Extension has kicked off National Physical Fitness Month with an invitation for people around the world to have fun being fit and fabulous during in an array of virtual classes and special workshops.
During the month of May, students are encouraged to keep dancing and experience the physical and mental benefits of dance, including improved strength and flexibility, coordination, endurance, and decreased stress. Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell makes history as Hubbard Street Dance artistic director

Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell is the first woman and first person of color to serve as artistic director of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and she thinks those two milestones will have a significant impact on the 43-year-old company’s future.
“The representation matters,” she said. “I think it matters with my vision, moving forward and trying to diversify the body of rep we bring in and trying to diversify the dancers we bring on board.”
The Baltimore native launched her dance career in 1989-92 as a Hubbard Street member before moving on to the famed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and she has returned to those roots after being on the dance faculty at Towson (Md.) University since 2005. Helping her to prepare for this transition was her tenure as artistic director of that school’s dance company. ....

“Despite a series of productive exchanges between CPS and the CTU leadership on Monday and Tuesday that should absolutely have led to a comprehensive agreement, we are deeply disappointed to announce we still have not reached a deal. Yesterday, there were a series of steps backwards that were simply not productive.”
Lightfoot said that after “80 plus” meetings between the two sides “we are out of runway.”
She said CPS has “bent over backward” to accommodate CTU’s issues and concerns.
“We waited for hours last night hours and still did not receive a proposal from the Chicago Teachers Union leadership,” Lightfoot said. “And as of this morning, we are still waiting, but to be clear, not patiently not anymore.” ....
