County Readies to Ramp Up Vax Efforts
As the Journal went to press March 30, the official tally held that Humboldt County residents had received a total of 49,378 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, with 14 percent of the population fully vaccinated and another almost 10 percent having received a first dose.
According to an analysis by the Washington Post, those numbers trail the national average (15 percent of the population fully vaccinated with another 14 percent partially vaccinated) and state (15 percent fully vaccinated, with another 15 percent having received a first dose). ....

It s 42 degrees and a bitter, spitty rain is tapping the sidewalks. Trees bend in the wind next to the Humboldt County Library, where a couple sits under a blue tarp draped over two shopping carts. A storm front is moving in, bringing days of cold weather and winds up to 30 miles per hour. But inside the 160-year-old Victorian that was William and Sarah Carson s first home in Eureka, it is warm. A fire burns in the hearth, a small dog named P.J. wiggles with excitement as tenants come in the front door and, in a back room, a woman recovering from chemotherapy sits propped against green silk pillows on a palatial bed. ....

Shlomo Rechnitz
It s understandable if you missed it. After all, the bombshell report dropped on New Year s Eve amid a torrent of headlines about surging COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths, as well the president s election denial, just days before an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol turned the world on its head.
But the
Washington Post published a devastatingly thorough investigative report on Brius Healthcare, which owns 80 nursing homes in California, including four in Humboldt County, making it the state s largest for-profit nursing home operator. The
Post s story detailed how Brius turns hundreds of millions of dollars in annual Medicare and Medicaid funding to care for elderly or infirm patients into massive profits through the use of so-called related-party transactions, in which its homes pay other companies owned by the same people marked-up fees to provide services. Essentially, Brius owners in addition to taking the company s profits pay themse ....

A Quartet of Good Reads

Editor:
Your Dec. 10 issue included four articles that I enjoyed. Ashley Harrell s cover story, The Last Howlers, gave me hope because Shelby and Alexis Wickizer are vocally keeping alive when the nightly hubbubs . . . have largely faded out community support for folks in many front-line occupations dealing with COVID. Linda Stansberry s autobiographical piece, Please Don t Cry in the Big Girl s Store, touched my heart, as her stellar style covered the important personal ground of fear vs. self-acceptance we bring from our childhoods. Rod Kausen s succinct The Death of Leo Gallagher brought to life a tragic event from 1928. Coach Kausen aptly described the impact of Gallagher s death on the Fortuna community and high school sports, and provided a perspective on local history for newcomers (I ve lived in Humboldt County for only 43 years) like myself. Rain and Steelhead Both on the Horizon, well, it shows why even non-anglers regularly read Kenny Priest s c ....
